Dear colleagues,
One word comes to my mind when looking back at the recent events unfolding in Europe: unpredictability. We are by now used to this feeling: since the outbreak of Covid-19 we have learnt to live with the impossibility of planning long-term – and the political sphere is no exception. The results of the French Presidential elections have renewed confidence in the European project, but only a week ago France – and therefore Europe – was facing the very real prospect of a fundamentally different path.
As war rages on in Ukraine, the security and affordability of our energy supply have become another major source of uncertainty for our industries. It is clear that an urgent aspect of strengthening Europe’s energy security is that we need to become more energy efficient. The more efficiently we use our energy, the less dependent we are on (Russian) fossil fuels. And the good news is that we already have the technologies that can make this happen. Another source of unpredictability for our companies is the severe disruption in the supply of raw materials. Accelerating the shift to a resource-efficient circular economy is therefore more important than ever, and once again Europe's technology companies provide the solutions to achieve this, as our case studies of Tech In Action show. But to fully unleash Europe’s potential in accelerating its energy and resource efficiency, far more investments must be redirected towards these enabling technologies – and this remains a key gap in the EU’s sustainable finance taxonomy that urgently needs to be closed.
Under the sign of continued uncertainty ahead, we continue our work on strengthening the policy conditions for the competitiveness and resilience of our industries. To name a few, together with other industry partners we are calling for rapid adoption of the EU Chips Act, and we have already marked our calendars for the next Orgalim Policy Exchange on the Sustainable Products Initiative on 1 June, partner event of the EU Green Week. Last but not least, our General Assembly in Stockholm is getting closer. With the participation of Commission EVP Margrethe Vestager and Swedish Minister for Business, Industry and Innovation, Karl-Petter Thorwaldsson, it will be a key opportunity to discuss the path to competitive sustainability of European industry, and to discover hands-on some of the most innovative start-ups in Europe. I hope to see many of you there.
Take care,
