Dear colleagues,
Many of us will remember a time when manufacturing was not associated with sustainability: how could factory smokestacks be compatible with a greener future? And in turn, there were those who saw a conflict between a greener future and competitiveness: how could the economy thrive if we limited resource use? Those days, it is safe to say, are long gone. We have entered the age of advanced manufacturing: the manufacturing of the future where innovation, sustainability and competitiveness not only co-exist, they actively drive and amplify each other. Today, industrial innovation across sectors is enabling a green and digital transformation – and securing the EU’s economic leadership in the process.
At our Orgalim conference and General Assembly in Stockholm this month, we zoomed in on how exactly Europe can unlock these benefits for its citizens. Together with our Swedish member Teknikföretagen, we welcomed technology industry representatives from across the continent to the Swedish capital. We were honoured to host speakers including Commission Executive Vice President Margrethe Vestager, who perfectly summed up how the conference themes of innovation, sustainability and competitiveness have shaped the EU: "three concepts that inspire our work in strengthening the Single Market – our greatest achievement and the fabric of our success for more than 30 years."
How can Europe’s decision makers help companies that embody these core values continue to thrive? This was the question topping the agenda at recent meetings of our Executive Forum for Advanced Manufacturing and our Presidents’ Board. A statement issued by the Executive Forum following its June meeting highlights three key priorities: scaling up public and private investment, catalysing industrial data sharing and use, and ensuring market-driven standardisation. More fundamentally, the foundation for our companies’ continued success remains an open and competitive market where they are incentivised to do what they do best: creating world-class innovation. A growing number of industrialists are getting concerned that current EU policies are chipping away at this foundation. As we welcome the incoming Czech Presidency of the Council of the EU in July, our industries look forward to renewing the EU’s commitment to an environment where the manufacturing of the future can deliver for all Europeans.
Take care,
