Dear all,
As we pass halftime on 2019, Romania has handed the baton of the Presidency of the Council of the EU to Finland – which began its term by presenting four key priorities for the next six months. Many of these calls to action were very welcome to us at Orgalim, chiming as they do with the imperatives put forward in our ‘2030: an industry vision for a renewed Europe’. Just this past month, much of our work has centred on making progress towards these shared objectives.
Take the Finnish Presidency’s ambition to make the EU ‘more competitive and socially inclusive’. A forward-looking industrial strategy will be key to making this happen, as outlined in the recommendations of the Commission’s High-Level ‘Industry 2030’ Roundtable. Prepared by industrial and societal leaders including our President Tomas Hedenborg, the report published in late June presents a clear roadmap for how industry and policy can work together to shape a future that’s good for Europe. Look, too, at the Presidency’s commitment to strengthening the EU’s position as a global leader in climate action: representing as we do the tech companies innovating for a greener future, this is also a top priority for Orgalim. Our participation in this year’s EU Sustainable Energy Week shone a spotlight on how digital tech can boost sustainability in the energy and transport sectors - just one way our industries are helping address the challenge of climate change.
So there is much common ground to underpin our industries' work with the Presidency in the coming months. Now the task will be to translate these shared ambitions into an ambitious long-term EU agenda. And with a fresh crop of MEPs taking their seats and a new Commission to be appointed in the autumn, it’s a good moment to think more generally about how we in industry can work with policymakers to make this happen – more on this in my latest blog post on ‘changing the conversation’. Orgalim is committed to a successful engagement, reinforced by the recent appointment of a new Deputy President and Vice President to support our President with our outreach at the highest levels. There will be plenty of hard work ahead as we face into the next legislative period, and Europe’s technology industries stand ready to play our part.
Best regards,
