Technology industries on both sides of the Atlantic call for an EU-U.S. agreement on conformity assessment
3 April 2024
Ahead of the Trade and Technology Council (TTC) meeting on 4-5 April 2024, the Information Technology Industry Council (ITI) and Orgalim, representing technology industries on both sides of the Atlantic, have issued a joint statement calling on the EU and the U.S. to conclude an agreement on Conformity Assessment as soon as possible.
In today’s challenging geopolitical environment, high-tech manufacturing companies are looking to the transatlantic partnership to deliver tangible results. An EU-U.S. agreement on Conformity Assessment doesn't just represent a strategic opportunity for the TTC to take concrete steps in reducing trade barriers; it serves as a cornerstone for a stronger, cleaner and more resilient transatlantic industrial base.
As we are confronted with an increasingly volatile geopolitical environment, the EU and the U.S. have all to gain from this concrete step to reinforce their manufacturing bases.
“I am happy to stand together with ITI in support of an EU-U.S. agreement on conformity assessment, which will strengthen our manufacturing base on both sides of the Atlantic” said Malte Lohan, Orgalim Director General. “As we are confronted with an increasingly volatile geopolitical environment, the EU and the U.S. have all to gain from taking concrete steps such as this to reinforce the transatlantic partnership.''
Consistent and harmonized international rules and standards are crucial for business growth and investment.
“Consistent and harmonized international rules and standards are crucial for business growth and investment” ITI CEO Jason Oxman stated. “We urge U.S. and EU policymakers to create agreements allowing for mutual recognition of conformity assessments outcomes, which help ensure that products and services meet appropriate standards for safety, interoperability, and accessibility, to facilitate consumer access to innovations from both sides of the Atlantic.”
