Orgalim welcomes the European Commission’s trade policy review
18 February 2021
Orgalim welcomes the European Commission Communication on the trade policy review. Europe’s technology industries are strongly export-oriented and depend on international trade for their success, representing over a third of the European Union’s manufactured exports.
As outlined in our submission to the consultation, we believe the EU must help companies to maintain leadership in the global competitiveness race by leading the international response to protectionism; standing up for free, fair and open rules-based trade; and enhancing market access for our companies.
We welcome some of the concrete suggestions as proposed by today’s Communication. Revamping the World Trade Organisation and strengthening the EU’s focus on the implementation and enforcement of Free Trade Agreements will be key. We will carefully monitor the new instrument to protect the EU economy against coercive measures by foreign governments and the EU strategy for export credits.
Strong cooperation with other trading blocs also remains a top priority. A fairer trade relationship with China is welcomed by our members. We also welcome the specific focus on the EU – US relationship, and we will discuss this further during our event "(Re)making friends: the revamp of the EU-US trade relationship" on 18 March.
We look forward to working with the Commission on the implementation. To that end, we also want to re-iterate our call for a new trade expert group.
