Conference: Sustainable energy security through sector coupling

A potential energy shortage is threatening the industrial performance in Europe. The war in Ukraine led to this challenge in the middle of the energy transition towards a climate friendly, sustainable supply based on renewable energy sources. As if this crucial development wasn’t enough of a challenge, the hot and dry summer reduced the efficiency of the existing, reliable sources of electricity.

The European industry has two stakes in this challenge. On the one hand side as an energy consumer, struggling with dramatically increasing costs. With the winter approaching, a reliable energy supply is at risk in many regions in Europe. Depending on the level of shortage, consequences can be dramatic from loss in global competitiveness to loss of capacity and jobs.

On the other side, the industry provides solutions to establish a reliable and sustainable energy supply based on a holistic approach for Europe and the world.

At the conference, we will put the spotlight on these two roles. Firstly, we will discuss the current energy situation in Europe and its impact on the industry. We will then focus on the concept of sector coupling which will leverage the efforts of the industry towards a sustainable, decarbonised energy system. The current findings in academic research will be presented, followed by a discussion of industry leaders. They will not only share opinions about currently available solutions and business opportunities but also on the regulatory framework conditions to gain momentum for the concept of sector coupling.

Site visit to the Paul Scherrer Institute

The Paul Scherrer Institute, PSI, is the largest research centre for natural and engineering sciences in Switzerland. During the tailor-made tour, we will have the opportunity to find out more about the research topics of the Paul Scherrer Institute in the company of an expert.

On a tour of the Swiss Light Source SLS you will discover how and where synchrotron light is generated at PSI. Thanks to its super-bright photon beams, synchrotron light at PSI allows for the investigation of the properties of a wide range of materials. Each of the 16 beamlines is optimised for a different technique and addresses research topics such as the mechanics of chemical reactions, crystallography of protein structures and the details of the combustion process. During this guided tour, researchers at PSI will show their beamlines and highlight their research.
