The European Commission today published the report of the Industrial Forum’s 'Task Force 5', providing a comprehensive set of recommendations for accelerating the deployment of advanced manufacturing technologies across European industry.

The report is the culmination of many months of work by the task force, bringing together the views of a wide range of participating stakeholders from the Commission, Member States, industry, social partners, and research and innovation organisations. Orgalim co-curates the task force together with Cecimo, the European association of machine tool industries and related manufacturing technologies.

“Europe needs a clear, ambitious and actionable strategy to capture the growth potential of the global manufacturing transformation, to keep up with accelerating global competition, and to take full advantage of the opportunities to strengthen its strategic autonomy and resilience while accelerating the green and digital transition,” the task force states in the report summary. “This report aims to kick-start that strategy.”

Entitled Advanced manufacturing at the heart of a resilient, sustainable and competitive Europe, the report makes more than 30 actionable recommendations across seven priority areas, grounded in a thorough SWOT analysis of the state of advanced manufacturing in Europe and illustrated through 12 use cases across different industrial ecosystems.

“Europe’s ability to deploy advanced manufacturing technologies rapidly and at scale is critical to its future industrial competitiveness and a precondition of the net zero industry transformation,” said Malte Lohan, Director General of Orgalim. “This report couldn’t be more timely, providing detailed recommendations that go a long way to helping deliver the Commission’s Green Deal Industrial Plan.”

The Industrial Forum supports the European Commission in its analysis of industrial ecosystems and in implementing the updated EU Industrial Strategy. Task Force 5 is one of five task forces under the Industrial Forum and was specifically charged with providing recommendations to speed up the deployment of advanced manufacturing across European industry. The other four have focused on providing economic intelligence on industrial ecosystems, on transition pathways, on the analysis of strategic dependencies and on identifying cross-border and cross-ecosystem investment needs and cooperation opportunities.

Going forward, Task Force 5 will monitor key actions and progress towards the objectives outlined in the report, so that Europe can react in a timely fashion to future obstacles as they emerge and identify potential actions required.
