Orgalim President Attends High-Level Exchange on Resilience and Diversification
Brussels, 18 September 2026: European Commissioner for Trade Maroš Šefčovič met with industry leaders, including Javier Ormazabal, CEO of Ormazabal and Velatia, and President of Orgalim, for a crucial exchange on economic security.
At the High-Level Exchange on Resilience and Diversification, the key agenda item was the ongoing work on the EU Diversification Instrument to strengthen Europe's industrial base against global supply shocks and unfair competition. Expected before the end of 2026, this initiative is a core part of the EU's Economic Security Strategy, aiming to protect key sectors from dependency risks that threaten supply stability and competitiveness.
As part of this, it is essential to identify which supply chains might be considered to have particularly high-risk dependencies, and to understand what factors business leaders consider when looking to switch or diversify suppliers, which measures they consider most effective for diversification, and whether business leaders support a regulatory approach for addressing issues.
Today, Europe faces a current trade deficit with China, amounting to roughly €1 billion per day, these highlight the instability of our supply-chain concentrations. As such industry representatives emphasised that resilience must go hand-in-hand with competitiveness; especially if businesses need to incorporate resilience measures that bear notable costs.
The path forward requires close collaboration between the EU and industry. Rather than creating new bureaucratic burdens, the focus is on adapting existing tools, fostering partnerships, and learning from international models like Japan's joint purchasing mechanisms.
As the EU develops this new instrument, Orgalim, its members and its leadership remains open to cooperation and dialogue, and we believe that the goal is not to isolate Europe, but rather to build a robust, diversified, and competitive European industry capable of thriving in a complex global landscape.
